PUBLISHED: 12 AUG 2020

Notice is hereby given that New Plymouth District Council resolved at its Council meeting of 21 July 2020 to establish a Māori ward for electoral purposes pursuant to section 19Z of the Local Electoral Act 2001.

This resolution will take effect for the 2022 and 2025 triennial elections unless a poll of electors of New Plymouth District takes effect.

Electors of New Plymouth District have the right to demand a poll to countermand the resolution pursuant to section 19ZB of the Local Electoral Act 2001.

Should a valid demand for a poll be received by 21 February (effectively
22 February 2021), a poll will be held by 21 May 2021 on the question of whether New Plymouth District should have a Māori ward with the outcome effective for the 2022 and 2025 triennial elections for New Plymouth District.

If a valid demand for a poll is received after 22 February 2021, a poll will be held after 21 May 2021 with the outcome applicable for the 2025 and 2028 triennial elections for New Plymouth District.

A valid demand for a poll must be:

  • Made in writing.
  • Signed by at least five per cent of electors enrolled as eligible to vote at the previous triennial election of the New Plymouth District Council.  This equates to 2873 valid elector signatures.
  • Delivered to the main office of the New Plymouth District Council, 84 Liardet Street, New Plymouth by 4pm on Monday 22 February 2021, marked for the attention of the Chief Executive, for the outcome of the poll to apply for the 2022 triennial election.

Every elector who signs a demand must legibly state against their signature, his or her full name and the address for which the person is qualified as an elector of the New Plymouth District.
