Dog Control Policy

Status: Approved by the Council on 2 September 2010 and amended 5 October 2010.

The purpose of this policy is to meet the requirements of the Dog Control Act 1996, with the objectives to:

  • encourage responsible dog ownership
  • minimise danger, distress and nuisance to the community generally
  • avoid the inherent danger in allowing dogs uncontrolled access to public places that are frequented by children
  • enable as far as is practicable the public to use the streets and public amenities without fear of attack or intimidation by dogs
  • recognise the exercise and recreational needs of dogs and their owners.
