Waitara Stormwater Programme

This programme of works addresses stormwater issues in Waitara, including flooding, degraded health of the waterways and lack of guidance for sustainable development.

NPDC is partnering with ngā hapū o Waitara (including Manukorihi, Otaraua, Pukerangiora, Ngāti Rāhiri), and Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa to create a programme of works for the Long Term Plan cycle 2021-2031. Keep reading to learn more about the programme and the specific projects that are part of it.

Richmond Street stormwater pipeline

We’re kicking off the physical works by installing a large-diameter stormwater pipe down Richmond Street.

The pipe will take about three months to install, requiring an open trench up to 4m deep in places. Because of this, the road will be closed to all traffic 24/7 over two stages:

  • Stage one: Richmond Street from Mouatt to Princess streets for seven weeks, not including a two-week Christmas/New Year break.
(A traffic diversion will be on Mouatt, Carey and Harris streets.)
  • Stage two: the Richmond/Princess/Harris intersection, for up to five weeks.
(A traffic diversion will be on Hutchins, High and King streets and Clifton Drive.)

There will still be traffic and pedestrian access to businesses and houses in the works area during the closure periods.

There will be periods when driveway access to properties will be restricted. On-site staff will communicate with affected residents.

Short water shutdowns will be required from time to time, and the affected properties will be notified beforehand.

Work will take place on-site from 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday, and possibly on Saturdays from 10am to 6pm. Construction will cease for two weeks over the Christmas and New Year holiday period, during which time the road will reopen to traffic.

Thank you for your patience during this time.
