Electoral System and Right To Demand a Poll

Notice is given under section 28 of the Local Electoral Act 2001, that the Single Transferable Voting electoral system will continue to be used for New Plymouth District Council’s next triennial election in 2022. 

Electors of New Plymouth District have a right to demand a poll at any time to countermand the use of the Single Transferable Voting electoral system. Should a valid demand for a poll be received by 21 February 2021 (effective 22 February 2021), a poll will be held by 21 May 2021 on whether the Single Transferable Voting or the First Past the Post electoral system will be used for the next two triennial elections (2022 and 2025) of the New Plymouth District Council. If a valid demand for a poll is received after 21 February 2021 (effective 22 February 2021), a poll will be held after 21 May 2021 with the outcome applicable for the 2025 and 2028 triennial elections. 

  • A valid demand must be: 
  • made in writing; 
  • signed by at least 5 percent of electors enrolled as eligible to vote at the previous triennial election of the New Plymouth District Council. This equates to 2,873 elector signatures;

delivered to the main office of the New Plymouth District Council, 84 Liardet Street, New Plymouth by 4pm, Monday 22 February 2021 marked for the attention of the Chief Executive, for the outcome of the poll to apply for the 2022 triennial election.

Every elector who signs a demand must legibly state against their signature, his or her full name and the address for which the person is qualified as an elector of the New Plymouth District.
