Source of blockage leading to sewage overflow unknown

News
PUBLISHED: 26 MAR 2026

A sewerage overflow into the Mangaotuku Stream in New Plymouth this morning was caused by a debris blockage on Thursday (26 March) morning.

The discharge occurred at 240 Devon Street West and started at 8.30am. Our team have responded and are on-site clearing the blockage.

Warning signs against swimming for 48 hours and collecting kai for 28 days have been erected at various locations.

We’re sorry this has occurred, and we’ve notified iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, Health New Zealand Taranaki, and other recreational groups. Keep up with the latest information on the Can I Swim page of our website.

We are investing $248m over 10 years to fix the district's plumbing.
