Celebrate Waitangi Day at Ngāmotu Beach with the whānau

Get together with your whānau this Waitangi Day, Friday 6 February, for an afternoon of live music, kai and activities to celebrate Aotearoa New Zealand’s national day at Ngāmotu Beach.

Performances by local artists will include the Bush Buds with their indie-folk sound, Te Kura Tuarua o Ngāmotu kapa haka, Soulburn Funk and their high-energy funk and soul, and alternative pop group Kokoa Nashi.

The free event, organised by NPDC every Waitangi Day since 2014, is supported by Ngāti Te Whiti and the Ministry of Culture and Heritage, and runs from 3pm to 6pm.

Tamariki (children) will be kept busy with colouring in, the playground, a bouncy castle, games, and an awesome foam cannon in the mix. Food trucks and coffee will be on site to keep the hunger pangs at bay.

“This is a great event to encourage our community to come together and acknowledge and celebrate Te Tiriti o Waitangi with friends and whānau at the beach,” says NPDC Events Lead Lisa Ekdahl.

Also supported by NPDC, the Waitara Night Markets are also holding their Waitangi ki Whaitara Market with local food, entertainment, kids and youth zones, and handmade craft stalled from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

 

At a glance

  • Parking is available along Ocean View Parade as well as Māori Wardens being on site opposite the Ngamotu Beach playground to guide visitor to an overflow carpark.
  • There will be waste stations set up on site to for visitors to dispose of rubbish and recycling accordingly to designated bins.
  • Although there is shade available under trees, a reminder to slip, slop, slap and be sun smart.
