Blockage causes sewer overflow

Local News
PUBLISHED: 25 SEPT 2025

A blockage caused by fat and wetwipes has resulted in a sewer overflow on Pioneer Road, New Plymouth.

The overflow into the Hongi Hongi Stream ran for 20 minutes this morning. Our team has responded and is on-site cleaning and sanitising the site.

Warning signs against swimming (for 48 hours after the discharge stopped) and collecting kai (for 28 days) have been put up at affected water bodies.

We’re sorry the overflow has occurred, and we’ve been in touch with iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, the Health New Zealand Taranaki and other recreational users. Keep up with the latest information on the Can I Swim page of our website.

We are in investing $289m over 10 years to 2034 to fix the district’s plumbing.
