New Plymouth District Mayor Max Brough has applauded the Coalition Government’s announcement yesterday to widen the scope of the $200 million Gas Security Fund, calling it a pragmatic and timely investment to get New Zealand’s energy resources moving again.

The broadened fund, jointly announced by Hon Shane Jones and Hon Chris Bishop, will now support a wider range of gas-related projects to accelerate or increase the volume of gas to market in the short, medium and long-term.

Such projects may include additional drilling in existing fields, production facility upgrades, exploration and appraisal drilling as well as greenfield exploration.

“We’re open for business. One of my top priorities is to support local businesses and grow our economy and getting gas back online will help make this happen,” says Mayor Max.

“We’ve long been the beating heart of New Zealand’s energy sector, we already have the infrastructure and workforce capability, and this would renew our region’s role in powering the country, while also supporting local jobs, innovation, and economic stability.”

Mayor Max acknowledged the challenges facing the sector, including constrained supply and rising energy costs, and praised the Government’s shift toward flexible, co-investment models aimed to reduce risk and attract investment from existing companies, as well as new companies that may be considering setting up here.

He also highlighted the importance of regional procurement and local workforce development, which would bring direct benefits to our community.

Mayor Max says he is committed to working collaboratively with Government to support securing New Zealand's energy future and on other emerging opportunities.
