Easter holiday period opening hours
Updated Sunday 30.11.25
Blockages in the line coming into the New Plymouth Wastewater Treatment Plant have caused two overflows from the NPDC wastewater system.
The first overflow started at 11am and stopped at 11.15am, Saturday 29 November.
The second overflow started at 11.50am and stopped at 13.10pm, Sunday 30 November.
The blockages were caused by rags and wipes.
The overflow has the potential to discharge to an unnamed tributary of the Waiwhakaiho River and therefore potentially affect public health.
Warning signs against swimming for 48 hours are in place at Waiwhakaiho River Mouth and at Bell Block Beach and our team have responded to and are monitoring the situation.
We’re sorry the overflows have occurred, and we’ve been in touch with iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, the Health New Zealand Taranaki and other recreational users.
Keep up with the latest information on the Can I Swim page of our website.
