Tree roots and fat cleared from block sewage pipe

Local News
PUBLISHED: 6 MAY 2025

A short wastewater overflow on Marina Grove, New Plymouth last night was caused by tree roots and fat blocking the sewage pipe.

The overflow into a tributary of the Waimea Stream started at 7pm yesterday and stopped just before 8pm. NPDC's team has cleaned and sanitised the site.

Warning signs against swimming (for 48 hours after the discharge stopped) and collecting kai (for 28 days) have been put up at affected water bodies.

Please dispose of fat by putting it in the red landfill bin - do not wash it down the sink or the toilet.

We’re sorry the overflow has occurred, and we’ve been in touch with iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, the Health New Zealand Taranaki and other recreational users. Keep up with the latest information on the Can I Swim page of our website.

We are in investing $248m over 10 years to fix the district’s plumbing.
