Weekend sewage overflow in Ferndale

Local News
PUBLISHED: 4 AUG 2025

A blockage in a sewer pipe caused an overflow into Waimea Stream off Anne Street, in Ferndale.

The discharge started at 6pm on Saturday and was stopped just before 7.30pm. NPDC's team has cleaned and sanitised the site.

Warning signs against swimming (for 48 hours after the discharge stopped) and collecting kai (for 28 days) have been put up at affected water bodies.

We’re sorry the overflow has occurred, and we’ve been in touch with iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, the Health New Zealand Taranaki and other recreational users. Keep up with the latest information on the Can I Swim page of our website.

We are in investing $248m over 10 years to fix the district’s plumbing.
