Heavy rain causes two overflows

  • High rainfall has resulted in two wastewater overflows in New Plymouth District.
  • The first was a consented discharge from the Inglewood Oxidation Ponds into the Kurapete Stream.
  • The discharge started around noon yesterday and is ongoing. NPDC is monitoring the discharge quality.
  • Warning signs to not swim have been erected at Everett Park entrance and main swimming hole.
  • The second was a short overflow from a sewage pump station in New Plymouth’s Glen Avon area into the Waiwhakaiho River this morning. The overflow started just before 5.00am and stopped around 5.15am.
  • Warning signs have gone up advising people not to swim or gather kai (for 28 days) at affected areas.
  • We’re sorry this has occurred and we’ve been in touch with iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, the local health authority and other recreational users.
  • Keep up with the latest information on the Can I Swim page on our website.
  • We are investing $248m over 10 years to fix the district’s plumbing.
