The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is Aotearoa New Zealand’s museum of contemporary art and the global home of Len Lye’s art and ideas. We’re a place where you can be inspired, get creative, and find new ways of looking at the world.
Established by New Plymouth woman Monica Brewster (née Govett), the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery opened in February 1970, founded on a visionary exhibition and collection policy. Astonishing locals and energising the national arts community, the Govett-Brewster leapt to the forefront of New Zealand’s contemporary art scene where it remains.
Since 1980, Len Lye has been part of the Gallery's story through the establishment of the Len Lye Foundation. In 2015 the award-winning Len Lye Centre opened within the Govett-Brewster, creating a global home for the art and legacy of Len Lye and a destination for researchers, artists and enthusiasts.
You can experience innovative and provocative work by the world’s leading contemporary artists. Exhibitions that change every four months are accompanied and extended by a programme of talks, tours, art-making, workshops, and a regularly changed selection of works from the Len Lye Foundation Collection and Archive.
The 60-seat Len Lye Centre Cinema is a welcoming environment to experience Len Lye’s films, local and international cinema, arthouse and experimental films, cult classics and film festivals. Tickets are available online or at the Govett-Brewster Shop.
For something a little different, the Govett-Brewster Shop offers contemporary design, objects of inspiration, jewellery, Len Lye and Govett-Brewster merchandise, books, gift cards, kids' stuff and limited edition collaborations mean you’ll definitely need to add extra time to your visit.
Monica’s Eatery, next door to the Govett-Brewster, is an international café inspired by the life and spirit of Monica Brewster, a globetrotter even before the golden age of air travel and founding patron of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery. Open seven days for Italian inspired cuisine – breakfast and lunch.
