Solar panels

More homes and businesses are having solar panels installed. Depending on the type of system and how it is installed, you may need a building consent before work starts.

In some cases, solar panel installations are exempt from building consent, for example where panels are installed on an existing roof, the solar panel arrays are less than 40 square metres and where design wind speeds do not exceed 44 metres per second.

However, you must still ensure that all work complies with the New Zealand Building Code, including wind loading, structural support, and weathertightness.

A building consent is more likely to be required where:

  • Panels are installed on a new or altered structure (such as a ground-mounted system or carport)
  • The installation affects the structural performance of the building
  • The building is in a higher wind zone or has specific design constraints

It is the responsibility of the property owner (or their installer) to confirm whether a building consent is required before starting work.

We recommend you check the national guidance below or contact us if you are unsure.
