Restricted building work

Restricted building work involves construction that is essential to making a home structurally sound and weathertight, and it must normally be designed and carried out by Licensed Building Practitioners (LBPs)

LBPs are registered professionals licensed for specific types of work such as design, carpentry, roofing, foundations, and site work. Because not all building professionals are licensed, choosing the right designer or tradesperson is important.
Each LBP involved must provide a Certificate of Design Work or a Record of Building Work, creating a formal record that protects current and future owners by showing who did the work and how it meets the Building Code.
However, homeowners can apply for an owner builder exemption, which allows them to carry out restricted building work on their own home or holiday home without using or supervising an LBP.
