A horrible goose is set to cause chaos in New Plymouth this summer, as Honk! Untitled Goose Exhibition makes its Aotearoa New Zealand debut at NPDC’s Puke Ariki Museum from 28 November.
Created by ACMI, Australia's museum of screen culture, the interactive exhibition dives into the making of global-hit videogame Untitled Goose Game, inviting audiences into the calamitous world behind the award-winning game.
A puzzle game of stealth and slapstick about a naughty goose on the loose in an unsuspecting village, Untitled Goose Game was created by Melbourne-based developers House House and released in 2019 to worldwide acclaim, selling more than a million copies in the first three months.
Now, for the first time, New Zealand audiences can go behind the scenes of the viral game sensation and discover how it was created.
Through displays of concept art, sketches and design material, Honk! Untitled Goose Exhibition reveals how the game was created. Playable versions of the game, including early development builds, allow visitors to experience the creative journey from concept to final release. The free exhibition also explores the game's mischievous humour and its connections to a century of slapstick comedy across film and television.
"We're excited to be bringing Honk! Untitled Goose Exhibition to New Zealand for the very first time,” says Frith Williams, Puke Ariki Museum Director. “It’s a celebration of imagination, mischief, and fun, and a fantastic way for families to spend time together over summer.
“Cheeky birds, like the kea, are no strangers to us, so I think visitors will relate to this mischievous goose.”
Puke Ariki exhibition curator Glenn Martin says visitors don’t have to be gamers to enjoy Honk!
“You don't need to know anything about the game before you come in. The exhibition is engaging and hands-on, offering visitors a fascinating look at how a small independent game studio created a game with such broad appeal.”
ACMI Director and CEO Seb Chan says “Untitled Goose Game is one of Melbourne’s most recognisable – and biggest selling – videogame exports of the past decade. We’re excited that the Goose is coming to Aotearoa where it can bring its slapstick humour and chaotic revelry to Puke Ariki. Honk! Untitled Goose Exhibition reveals to audiences how it was made, and the wider cultural context it has come from, why the Goose is so mischievous, and I hope it inspires young and old to try their hand at both playing and making quirky videogames.”
To celebrate the exhibition's opening, Puke Ariki Museum will host a day of goose-inspired chaos on Saturday 28 November. Visitors can create their own feathered costumes and join our Goose Fashion Parade, with prizes for the most fabulous, mischievous creations.
Honk! Untitled Goose Exhibition is on at Puke Ariki Museum from 28 November 2026 until 7 June 2027.
