Walking your dog in the city centre
From Saturday 7 November 2026, you can walk your dog in the city centre, but it must be on a lead and under control at all times.
Summer is on the horizon, and there’s no better way to cool off than at one of NPDC’s outdoor community pools which open this weekend.
The Todd Energy Aquatic Centre got the summer pool season underway a few weeks ago, and now the community pools are ready to dive in with Ōkato, Inglewood and Waitara making a splash from 14 November, while Fitzroy Pool joins the summer lineup on 19 December, just in time for the school holidays.
NPDC Aquatics Manager Sarah Brittain says the team is excited to welcome the community back for another action-packed summer season.
“We are looking forward to welcoming our communities back for another great summer season” says Brittain.
“Whether you're looking to cool off on a hot day, spend quality time with family and friends, or stay active over the summer months, our community pools offer something for everyone.
“We’ve completed a number of improvements ahead of opening, including a new heating system at Waitara Pool, and at Ōkato Pool we've improved accessibility at the front entrance to ensure our facilities continue to meet the needs of our communities.
“With great facilities, fun for all ages and a safe place to enjoy the water, we encourage everyone to come along, have fun and make the most of their local pool this summer.”
While the community pools prepare to open for the summer, the Todd Energy Aquatic Centre continues to be one of the region’s top summer destinations, with its outdoor pool, hydro slides and café, plus the popular destination Kāwaroa playground right next door.
Safety remains a top priority across all New Plymouth District Council Pools, with recently updated child supervision rules now in place at the Todd [SB1] Energy Aquatic Centre. While these changes do not apply at Waitara, Okato, Inglewood and Fitzroy Pools, we encourage people to familiarise themselves with the safety rules for the pools before they visit.
So grab your togs, pack the sunscreen and dive into a summer of fun at your local pool.
