A passionate community leader, artist, a dedicated LGBTQI+ advocate, a local theatre enthusiast and numerous community stalwarts and volunteers are among the local legends recognised with a NPDC Youth and Citizens’ Award.
One youth and 10 citizens’ award winners were announced at an event hosted by New Plymouth District Mayor Max Brough last night, recognising their hard work and contributions they make to the district.
Established in 1979, the annual awards honour residents who go the extra mile and make a big positive change to the lives of people in the district.
Nominated by the public, recipients are selected by the Mayor and Councillors.
“These award winners have given up countless hours to help others and because of their efforts New Plymouth isn’t just a place we live but is a special place people feel connected and proud to call home,” said Mayor Max.
“The winners have led by example and have shown all of us - young and old - what’s possible when people step up, give back, and look out for others in our community,”

YOUTH AWARD
Orenia Williams
Orenia is an exceptional young leader already making a meaningful impact in the New Plymouth community through her initiative, drive and commitment to service.
At just 16 years old, Orenia has demonstrated outstanding leadership in civic engagement, co-founding the New Plymouth Youth Advisory Group in partnership with Council. Through her initiative, young people now have a platform to share their perspectives and help shape local decision-making – strengthening youth voice and representation across the district.
CITIZENS’ AWARDS
Bryce Barnett MNZM
Bryce has made an extraordinary and lasting contribution to Taranaki over more than three decades – shaping our region through leadership, generosity and an unwavering commitment to community.
A respected local businessman, philanthropist and community leader, Bryce has dedicated both his professional and personal life to improving the wellbeing of others. His impact spans philanthropy, governance, heritage, emergency services, youth development and regional growth – touching the lives of countless people, organisations and whānau across Taranaki.
Fiona Clark
Fiona has dedicated more than five decades to championing people, places and the environment in Taranaki and beyond – leaving a powerful and lasting legacy through her art, advocacy and community service.
From the early years of her career, Fiona stood at the forefront of environmental protection, playing a leading role in campaigns to safeguard Motunui and the Waitara Valley. Her work alongside iwi and community leaders helped amplify voices that deserved to be heard and contributed to important conversations about environmental responsibility.
Maree Dally
Maree has given more than two decades of dedicated service to the New Plymouth community – making a profound and lasting difference in the lives of countless whānau.
For more than 20 years with Mainly Music, Maree created a welcoming, supportive space where young families could connect, belong and thrive. Her warmth, care and leadership helped shape a nurturing environment for hundreds of parents, caregivers and tamariki (children).
Dando Andrews
Dando has made a powerful and lasting contribution to Taranaki – championing inclusion, supporting rangatahi, and helping build a safer, more connected community for our rainbow whānau.
Over the past seven years, Dando has dedicated themselves to uplifting others through their work in social services, education and community advocacy. Through roles with InsideOUT Kōaro, Mates and Dates, and their own social work practice, they have been a strong and trusted advocate for young people across the region.
Harry Duynhoven, QSO
Harry has given more than 45 years of outstanding service to New Plymouth and Taranaki – a lifetime of leadership, commitment and genuine care for his community.
A familiar and trusted face across the region, Harry’s contribution spans local, regional and national leadership. From tradesman and educator to Member of Parliament, Minister of the Crown, Mayor and long-serving District Councillor, he has consistently championed the people of Taranaki at every level.
Kirsten Keighly
Kirsten has been a driving force behind the success and spirit of Waitara Soccer Club for more than a decade – giving her time, energy and heart to growing the game and supporting her community.
A dedicated player and captain of the women’s team, Kirsten leads by example both on and off the field. She is a passionate mentor to younger players, helping build confidence, skills and a love of the game for the next generation of footballers.
Leonard Mace
Leonard ‘Leo’ has been a dedicated and generous contributor to the New Plymouth community for more than four decades – quietly giving his time, skills and energy to support the people and organisations around him.
Leo has made an outstanding contribution to local theatre, working behind the scenes at New Plymouth Repertory Theatre for more than 25 years. Through his expertise in sound and lighting, he has helped bring countless productions to life. His commitment has extended beyond technical support, serving in leadership roles as president and treasurer, and generously using his electrical skills to assist with upgrades and maintenance of the theatre.
Amy Olsen
Amy has been an active member of the Waitara community for many years. She has a natural ability to relate to many people from a variety of age groups and backgrounds.
This has put her in good stead to take on the role as Operations Manager for Waitara Foodbank Pātaka Kai. For the past five years she has been part of a multi-talented team of volunteers who have transformed the food sovereignty landscape in Waitara, to ensure that no one in Waitara goes hungry.
Hazel Reed
Hazel has been a familiar and much-loved presence in the New Plymouth community for more than 20 years – quietly making a real difference through her dedication, generosity and unwavering support for others.
Since 2005, Hazel has led a remarkable grassroots fundraising effort for Hospice Taranaki, raising thousands of dollars each year through the sale of handcrafted knitted garments.
Suraya Sidhu Singh
Suraya has made a powerful and lasting contribution to the New Plymouth community through her passionate advocacy for better, more accessible public transport.
Over several years, Suraya has been a strong and effective voice for transport users – championing safer, more equitable and more sustainable options for people across the district. Her work has helped ensure that the needs and experiences of everyday commuters are heard and understood by decision-makers.

- NPDC Citizens’ Awards has been running annually since 1979.
- Each year up to 12 Citizens and three Youth awards are given from nominations made by New Plymouth district residents.
- In 2024 a new Youth Award was introduced where residents can nominate a person between the ages of 12 and 24 years for their services to the community.
