An overflow at the New Plymouth Wastewater Treatment Plant has stopped and the plant's team is monitoring the site.

The overflow on site started on Monday and ceased at 9am the next day. The overflow volume was small and it is unlikely that the discharge reached the unnamed tributary of the Waiwhakaiho River; however, as there is the potential to affect public health, warning signs at east and west of the Waiwhakaiho River Mouth and at Bell Block Beach have been changed to 'no swimming' and will be in place for 48 hours.

We're sorry the overflow has occurred, and we've been in touch with iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council and Health New Zealand Taranaki.

NPDC is investing $289m over 10 years to 2034 to fix the district's plumbing.
