NPDC seeks feedback on Devon Street West cycle separator trial

Bumble bees, ‘tim tams’ or back to the future?

These are just some of the questions NPDC is looking for the answers to in a survey launched today to gather feedback on road layout changes being trialled on a section of Devon Street West.

NPDC has been trialling the temporary changes for several months and the feedback will help decide the future of cycle separators and other safety features on the Devon St West/South Road/SH45 corridor.

Since May, black and yellow rubber alternatives have replaced the concrete cycle separators between Belt Road and Morley St, key components of trial which also included:

  • Introducing a shared footpath on the northern side of the road for less confident cyclists
  • A painted on‑road cycle lane for more confident riders
  • A wider median and full size right-hand turning bay wider median at Cutfield Road
  • Nine new on‑street car parks the northern side
  • Moving the bus stop was moved slightly and is now located alongside the westbound cycle lane.

The trial was requested by Council resolution earlier this year to help the Mayor and Councillors decide what happens next with the cycle separators and other safety improvements introduced between Morley St and Barrett Road corridor - changes that have prompted strong public debate.

The survey asks people for views on the trial elements, if any have merits on other parts of the corridor as well as views on what should happen on the entire corridor, including reinstating it back to its original design.

For New Plymouth District Mayor Max Brough, it’s time to put the issue to bed one way or another so he’s encouraging people who live, work, run a business or regularly use the route fill out the survey.

 “While I have a personal view on what I would like to see happen, the decision was made by Council to run the trial so this survey is important part of process we need to go to through.

 “But I’ve also asked to get feedback on what people would like to see happen next, not just in the trial area but also along the that whole corridor.   

The feedback will be included in a report due to go to the full Council in October and Mayor Max is confident of one thing – a final decision will be made. 

“This has just gone on too long and I am sure everyone is over hearing about cycle separators and ‘tim tams.’ We’ve just got to get on with it and move on.”
