A sewer overflow into the Tasman Sea via the Eliot Street outfall was caused by high and intense rainfall on Friday (11 July) night.
The intense rainfall overwhelmed the Te Henui Pump Station and our team responded to get it up and running again.
The overflow started at 9.19pm and stopped at 10.50pm. Warning signs against swimming for 48 hours after the discharge has ceased and collecting kai for 28 days, have been put up at affected water bodies.
We’re sorry this has occurred, and we’ve notified iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, Health New Zealand Taranaki, and other recreational groups.
Keep up with the latest information on the Can I Swim page of our website. We are investing $248m over 10 years to fix the district's plumbing.
