WWTP discharge into Waiwhakaiho

PUBLISHED: 31 AUG 2023

A power outage at the New Plymouth Waste Water Treatment Plant has caused an unconsented discharge of treated wastewater from the pipe offshore from the Waiwhakaiho River today.

The discharge lasted about an hour from 11.30am to 12.30pm.

As there is the potential to affect public health, warning signs against swimming and collecting kai have been put east and west of the Waiwhakaiho River mouth.

We’re sorry this has occurred, and we’ve been in touch with iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, the Taranaki District Health Board and other recreational users.

Keep up with the latest information on the Can I Swim page on our website.

We are investing $248m over 10 years to fix the district’s plumbing.
