Roots cause sewage overflow

PUBLISHED: 29 AUG 2023

Tree roots blocking a manhole have caused a wastewater overflow on Pioneer Road into New Plymouth’s Hongihongi Stream this morning.

The overflow lasted about two and half hours before our team stopped it and then cleaned and sanitised the area.

As there is the potential to affect public health, warning signs against swimming and collecting kai have been put up at affected water bodies.

We’re sorry this has occurred, and we’ve been in touch with iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, the Taranaki District Health Board and other recreational users.

Keep up with the latest information on the Can I Swim page on our website.

We are investing $248m over 10 years to fix the district’s plumbing.
