Swimming alert at Fitzroy Beach

Please don’t swim or gather food at Fitzroy Beach.

Testing of the water at the beach by Taranaki Regional Council on 9 December returned elevated levels of the potentially-harmful bacteria.

We’re sorry this will inconvenience people hoping to spend the weekend at Fitzroy Beach.

A contractor accidentally damaged a sewage pipe in Konini Street, Inglewood, resulting in a wastewater leak identified yesterday afternoon.
We quickly made repairs and the leak stopped after three hours, but some wastewater flowed into a tributary of the Waiongana Stream.
We’re sorry this has happened and we’ve been in touch with iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, the Taranaki District Health Board and other recreational users.
Warning signage has gone up advising people not to swim (for two days) or gather kai (for 28 days) in the affected areas.
