NPDC purchased a property covering 41.83 hectares at 161 Airport Drive for $4.2m.
A small part of the land purchased will be utilised for the Bell Block to Waitara Coastal Walkway extension and the balance held for possible future airport development.
The purchase was approved by the Mayor and Councillors at the full Council meeting on 9 November 2021.
It was presented to NPDC as a strategic opportunity after consultation with the Board of Papa Rererangi I Puketapu Limited, the New Plymouth Airport company.
Part of the cost was covered by the $300,000 walkway funding for this purchase in the Council’s 10-Year Plan, and the remaining $3.9m has been debt-funded and interest costs will be partially offset from future grazing rental income.
