Work began in March at Lake Mangamahoe to upgrade the water collection system that supplies the New Plymouth Water Treatment Plant.
The project will take six months to finish. As a result of the upgrades, the treatment plant will be supplied with better-quality water, which will make treatment more efficient. The improved intakes in the lake will also be more resilient, and the new fish screens (within the intakes) will provide greater protection for fish.
What we’re doing
Please note that due to the lack of available space around the middle intake’s site, the road around Lake Mangamahoe will be down to one lane for a few weeks in March and June.
The fish screens for the raw water intakes do not meet best practice for fish screening. Durning this upgrade, we are also upgrading the intakes to be able to draw better-quality raw water for the New Plymouth Water Treatment Plant (which will make the treatment process more efficient).
The intakes are a vital part of our drinking water system. Lake Mangamahoe is our primary source of water for the New Plymouth water supply, and the intakes are how water is drawn from the lake for treatment.
The New Plymouth water supply services properties from Waitara to Omata.
No, fly-fishing can still take place outside of the works area, and vehicles with horse trailers will still be able to access the bridle trail.
