Labour Day public holiday opening hours
Over the Labour Day public holiday, some of our facilities will be closed or have reduced hours.
Status: Finished.
We have replaced nearly all of Urenui’s water pipes over 18 months. This was an important project to resolve Urenui’s long-standing issue of water pipes bursting and is part of NPDC’s $248m commitment to fix the plumbing in our district.
Area one: Completed. (Replaced 665m of old pipes on the western edge of Urenui between Whakapaki Street, Dowman Street, and Te Rangi Hiroa Place.)
Area two: Completed. Area two stretches from State Highway 3 to Ritimona Street, and includes parts of Ngapapa Street and Ngakoti Street.
Area three: Completed. Area three takes in a circular block around Ngakoti Street, Totara Street, and Ngapapa Street on the east side of State Highway 3.
There was a long-standing problem of water pipes bursting in Urenui due to ageing pipes, requiring costly ongoing repairs. The former pipes were asbestos-cement pipes and at more than 50 years old, they had reached the end of their useful life.
The new pipes are MPVC and PVC – a type of plastic that is strong and durable for years to come. This type of pipe is common across New Zealand.
We replaced 90 per cent of the town’s pipes – about 2,160m.
The remaining pipes did’t need to be replaced due to their age.
We are scheduling the replacement of water pipes that are coming to the end of their life throughout the district, as part of our $248m commitment to fix the plumbing in the district. This project in Urenui followed a successful three-year project in Inglewood.
