Natural Hazards

The New Plymouth District Council’s Preliminary Community Climate Change Risk Assessment (PCCCRA) looks at how climate change could affect local communities, infrastructure, the natural environment, and the economy.

The purpose was to understand which communities in the district should be prioritised for Local Adaptation Planning. It identifies areas most at risk from hazards like flooding, sea-level rise, drought, and heatwaves, with Waitara, New Plymouth West, and Northern Taranaki Hill Country facing the highest risks. The report highlights that socially vulnerable communities and critical infrastructure are especially exposed. It uses existing data to provide a starting point for future planning and recommends working with iwi and communities to improve understanding and response. The assessment is not complete and will be updated as more data becomes available and is not property specific.
