Small wastewater overflow quickly stopped

A small overflow of wastewater was quickly stopped at the New Plymouth Wastewater Treatment Plant this afternoon.

The overflow, which started at 11am and ceased at 11.10am, is unlikely to have reached an unnamed tributary of the Waiwhakaiho River. However, given the potential to affect public health, warnings to not swim or collect kai are in place east and west of the Waiwhakaiho River mouth and at Bell Block Beach.

The cause of the discharge is not known and an investigation is underway.

We’re sorry this has occurred and we’ve been in touch with iwi and hapū, Taranaki Regional Council, the local health authority and other recreational users.

The location of signage and other current water quality warnings can be viewed on Council’s Can I Swim Webpage.

We are investing $248m over 10 years to fix the district’s plumbing.
