Built, Cultural and Natural Heritage Protection Funds

The Built, Cultural and Natural Heritage Protection funds were established by NPDC to help people manage, preserve and enhance the heritage, cultural and natural heritage values of their properties.

These funds provide a partial contribution towards the cost of a specific heritage project or work.

This page provides an overview of each fund. More information, including the assessment criteria, can be found in the policy and schedules on the Community Funding Investment Policy page.

Built Heritage Protection Fund

Applications can be made for heritage buildings and items.

Activities that will be considered for a grant include, but are not limited to:

  • Earthquake strengthening
  • Repair or replacement of verandas, rooves, etc.
  • Repiling
  • Exterior cleaning and painting
  • Specialist building work (e.g. stonework)

Applications are considered annually. Applications are currently open and close on 4 July 2025.

Cultural Heritage Protection Fund

Applications can be made for archaeological sites and sites and areas of significance to Māori.

Activities that will be considered for a grant include, but are not limited to:

  • Priority works to clear overgrown and unusable sites
  • Water connection assistance to urupā
  • Fencing (e.g. around a pā site to prevent stock damage)
  • Retaining walls or earthworks to prevent or remedy erosion
  • Specialist underground geotechnical investigations to locate urupā for protection
  • Structural repairs, cleaning and/or painting of stonework, monuments, memorials or headstones associated with a pā sites or other archaeological sites or sites of significance to Māori
  • Development of agreements (legal or otherwise) between landowners and mana whenua to transfer ownership of the site or provide access to sites on private land
  • Installation of interpretive signage for the site

Applications are considered annually. Applications are currently open.

Natural Heritage Protection Fund

Applications can be made for natural areas. 

The grant covers fencing to protect the natural area from stock damage.

Applications are open year-round.
