Reusable containers

A range of food businesses and bulk food stores now encourage you to bring your own clean container when you buy takeaway lunch and dinners, or when you’re shopping for bulk foods, meat and fish, and deli and bakery items.

This is allowed by the Ministry for Primary Industries (who administer the Food Act). Just make sure that your container is clean, dry, and has a good seal so it doesn’t leak. Remember that after you buy food, you’re responsible for its safety. So keeping deli items and raw meat and fish sealed in a chilly bin or bag with ice packs is a good idea when you’re transporting them. Learn more on the MPI website.

Head along to any of the food businesses and bulk food stores listed below with your clean containers, which they will welcome. At the businesses with an orange ring on the map below you’ll even receive a discount when you bring your own container!
