The role of the Board
The Board exists to protect the interests of the community and the shareholder (NPDC). Its responsibilities include:
- Strategic direction: Setting long‑term priorities for water and wastewater services, capital investment, and organisational capability.
- Safety and compliance: Ensuring that the organisation meets national obligations under the Water Services Act 2021, including the duty to supply safe drinking water, maintain strong risk management, and comply with monitoring and reporting rules.
- Regulatory alignment: Overseeing compliance with the Drinking Water Quality Assurance Rules, wastewater environmental performance standards, and other regulatory requirements set by Taumata Arowai.
- Risk oversight: Monitoring operational, financial, environmental, and compliance risks.
- Financial stewardship: Ensuring responsible investment and transparent reporting, consistent with national expectations under Local Water Done Well and economic regulation reforms.
- Customer protection: Overseeing obligations relating to customer information, service performance, and complaint processes as required under the Water Services Act.
Through these duties, the Board ensures that the organisation acts in the public interest at every level.
