Yes. Until 1 July 2027, New Plymouth District Council (NPDC) will continue to deliver drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater services and remain your main point of contact. Wai Hononga is currently being established and is working behind the scenes to prepare for the transition of drinking water and wastewater services from 1 July 2027.
Wai Hononga Water Services Limited is New Plymouth District's dedicated water services organisation, established to deliver drinking water and wastewater services for the district.
Wai Hononga was established to provide a dedicated organisation focused solely on drinking water and wastewater services, helping ensure these essential services remain safe, reliable, and sustainable for future generations.
Wai Hononga is currently in its establishment phase and is expected to commence operations on 1 July 2027.
Yes. Wai Hononga is a council-controlled organisation (CCO) and remains 100% publicly owned by New Plymouth District Council.
No. Wai Hononga will provide drinking water and wastewater services only. Stormwater services will continue to be delivered by New Plymouth District Council.
The name reflects the important role water plays in connecting people, communities, and the environment. It recognises our shared responsibility to care for water and deliver services that support current and future generations.
Wai Hononga is governed by an independent Board of Directors appointed by New Plymouth District Council. The Board provides strategic oversight and helps ensure the organisation delivers safe, reliable, and sustainable water services.
Most customers should experience little change in the day-to-day delivery of drinking water and wastewater services. Our focus is on ensuring a smooth transition while maintaining reliable services for the community.
Until 1 July 2027, NPDC remains responsible for drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater services.

All households have installed water meters across New Plymouth District as part of NPDC's universal metering programme. For information about your property's meter status, please visit the NPDC website.
If you suspect a leak on private property, contact a qualified plumber to investigate and carry out any necessary repairs.
NPDC is preparing a mock billing programme to help households understand their water use and identify possible leaks before any future move to usage-based charging. Mock bills are planned to begin from October 2026 for information purposes only.
Water and wastewater infrastructure requires ongoing maintenance, renewal, and upgrades to ensure services remain safe, reliable, and fit for the future.
Through long-term planning and investment, Wai Hononga aims to ensure drinking water and wastewater services continue to meet the needs of a growing district.
Current water and wastewater projects can be found on the NPDC website until Wai Hononga begins operating on 1 July 2027.
