Schools

Getting to school and kura can be fun, safe and healthy if we encourage our tamariki to make active and sustainable choices!

The Let’s Go School Travel Planning Programme aims to encourage children and their whānau to look at alternatives to the car to get to and from school. We promote active and sustainable travel choices such as a riding, walking, scootering, skating, bussing, ‘park and walk’ and rideshare options.

The future generations of our district are in schools and kura. Sharing the Let’s Go message means we can promote to children and whānau the range of benefits such as improving health and wellbeing, saving money, helping the environment, creating safer streets, encouraging independence and having fun!

How we can help your school

The Let’s Go team work with primary, intermediate and high schools in New Plymouth to:

  • understand what is happening at your school (trends, issues etc.)
  • get students involved in the Let’s Go Student Leadership teams
  • organise fun events and competitions which invite the school community to try active and sustainable travel and reward those already doing it
  • support school projects such as bike/scooter sheds, bike tracks and improved entrances
  • identify opportunities to improve the safety and connections on school streets and roads.

And the results?

Before beginning their active travel journeys many schools started with as little as 30% of their students actively travelling to school. That number rises to on average 69% after participating in our programme.
