Parking

There is a variety of parking options in New Plymouth's CBD, from on-street to off-street and leased parking spaces.

Important message

Parking in New Plymouth city centre is half-price over the festive season.

All on-street parking and NPDC car parks will cost just $1.50 an hour from 29 November 2025 to 11 January 2026, and the first two hours in the Downtown Car Park are free.

So take your time over the holiday period and support our city centre retailers.

Four easy ways to pay

We've upgraded our ageing parking meters in the city centre, with new modern units that give you a range of payment options:

  • Coin*
  • Credit or debit card (does not accept EFTPOS)
  • PayMyPark app via the app on your smartphone.
  • Touch N Go. This is a new system for the district, which allows users to use an NFC (near field communication) enabled device to make contactless payments by ‘tapping’ the screen to access. Alternatively scan the QR code that appears on the Touch N Go unit. Check out the video here.

* Not all machines are able to take coins but those that do will be clearly marked.

How to use Touch N Go

  1. Enable the NFC (Near-Field Communication) setting on your mobile device, hold your smartphone close to the box and follow the prompts.
  2. Alternatively, open the camera on your smartphone and hover your camera lens over the QR code. Click the link that populates and follow the prompts (you can enable QR code scanning on your smartphone's camera settings). Make sure to check the URL is correct and the browser link is PayStay Guest (www.paystay.co.nz/guestparking) before entering your details.

  1. Enter your vehicle’s number plate and mobile number and press ‘continue’.
  2. Select how long you’d like to park and press ‘continue’.
  3. Choose your payment method.
  4. If you want an e-receipt, select ‘yes’ to email or download.

Pay by Plate

From 17 February 2025, we moved to a pay-by-plate system, which means instead of typing a parking bay number into the machine or your app, you use your vehicle's number plate.

Paying by plate means you can move to another metered car park, without having to pay again, provided you still have time left on your on-street parking session. This does not apply to Warehouse Car Park, Downtown Car Park or leased parking.

10 minute courtesy period

The parking meters and Touch N Go machines have an in-built 10-minute courtesy period for you to arrange your payment for parking. If you're going to be less than 10 minutes, then by all means duck in and out free of charge - just be sure to return before the 10 minutes are up!
