I'm John Woodward - a proud multi-generational New Plymouth local with a proven track record in business, law enforcement, and community service. I bring real-world experience, not politics.
My background includes 14 years as a frontline NZ Police officer, where I upheld the highest standards of honesty, accountability, integrity and was also a bravery award recipient. I've built and led successful businesses in transport, retail, and heavy vehicle training - turning struggling operations into profitable, well-run enterprises.
I know how to manage budgets, cut unnecessary costs, and deliver results. That's exactly what New Plymouth District Council needs.
I'll put a stop to wasteful spending, fight for fairer rates, prioritise core services, and ensure local contracts go to local businesses. My promise is simple: straight talk, responsible leadership, and common-sense decision-making you can trust.
I'm standing for Mayor and Councillor to bring practical solutions, not politics. Learn more at www.johnwoodward.co.nz.
Yes
What?
I’ll protect core services but review “nice-to-have” projects and pause those not essential now. I’ll cut waste, boost efficiency, and consult the community before changes, ensuring every dollar delivers real value.
Yes
What?
Yes. We must ensure NPDC is doing everything possible to keep our district open for business, attracting investment, supporting innovation, and creating opportunities so Taranaki thrives beyond oil and gas.
No
Why?
We need a solid, long-term, inter-agency approach to rough sleeping, working with iwi, MSD, mental health services, and counsellors to address root causes, provide support, and help people into safe, stable housing.
No
Why?
I don’t support delivering water and wastewater services through a CCO. Public submissions were ignored, and that’s not right, community voices must be respected on decisions that affect such essential services.
Yes
Why?
We can all do more on climate change, and NPDC should lead by example, reducing emissions, supporting sustainable projects, and working with the community to protect our environment for future generations.
No
Why?
In the current economy, with many struggling, the $50m Tūparikino Hub is not essential. We must urgently review its feasibility and focus spending on core needs before committing to major new projects.
No
Why?
Cycle safety matters, but the current design is terrible and unsafe. There are far better options, yet public submissions were ignored. We need safe, smart infrastructure that genuinely protects all road users.
Remove
Why?
I don’t believe we need any wards. We should strengthen community boards and ensure all cultures are respected and heard. I will work to represent everyone through inclusive and effective local decision-making.
NPDC should work with local businesses, iwi, and event organizers to promote our unique venues and lifestyle, streamline approvals, and offer smart incentives, making our district a top choice for major events year-round.
My top priorities are to reduce council debt and reduce rates. I’ll focus on responsible spending, pausing non-essential projects, and improving efficiency so we deliver essential services while easing the burden on ratepayers.
