This could be the most important council election for years. Double-digit rate increases for the last three years are unacceptable.
A few of us fought that, but didn't have the numbers. I know there is a need for change, but there is also a need for an experienced councillor who knows how to effect change.
I will continue to advocate for stopping the Devon St cycleway; keeping an in-house water service and putting the walkway extension on hold. I am fiercely independent, with no political party affiliations. Council spending starts with the three-yearly Long-Term Plan and I tried to get millions cut from it this term.
I would love to be part of a refreshed council to be able to make those cuts a reality. Give me the numbers and I will make it happen. I am there to serve the community, not dictate to it.
Yes
What?
There are always savings to be found. Some services may be reduced, but not cut if not fully used. Recent rate increases mean we must live within our means and 'stick to the knitting'. Cycle ways would be gone. Len Lye Centre costs reduced.
No
What?
Much as some on the left would like, we can't solve the problems of the world. We need a majority of Councillors who are financially prudent, which once again means 'back to basics'. Our ratepayers deserve a break!
Yes
Why?
You could argue, council is doing more than enough. Once again the left would have us solving every problem. You pay taxes, now you are paying rates to fix the same issue. But we need to look after our CBD retailers who are doing it tough.
No
Why?
I, and several others, voted to keep it in-house rather than a CCO. NPDC need to keep control, especially on pricing. A CCO means we are one step removed from control and reporting quarterly is too historical. A lot can happen in 3 months.
No
Why?
It is already costing us an increasing amount. As the left-leaning councillors have dragged us further to solve the problems of the world, so have your rates gone up. And up.
Yes
Why?
We owe it to our community, from pre-school to retirees, there will be something for everyone. We all need to be active and many sports will be catered for. The cost will be well below $50m as all external funding raised comes off that amount.
No
Why?
They haven't worked well in many places in NZ. We are a hilly district. Another case of left-wing mantra winning! Residents deserve to be able to park outside their houses. This is a disaster. The only good tim-tams are sold in supermarkets.
Keep
Why?
One vote out of 15 around the table hardly changes anything. There is nothing to fear as the last three years have shown.
We must be nimble enough to make speedy decisions when we have to. The recent change to create an extra fund at arm's length from elected members is a good start and will produce great returns to our district.
1. Cut costs, but not services. There is plenty of 'fat' that can be cut from our budgets. 2. Move away from the 'well beings' that make some councillors want to save NP, NZ and the planet.
