Reining in rates is the priority. Clearly some capital projects such as the extension of the Coastal Walkway must be paused, but not scuttled. However, it's important we don't throw out the baby with the bath water. We still need to invest in our roads and water infrastructure.
During my first term on council I have been pragmatic and positive. I have pivoted on several issues to better represent ratepayers. I withdrew my support for the cycling separators, and the Tūparikino Active Hub in 2023 when costs escalated. But supported it a year later after it was redesigned at a lower cost.
I am best known for supporting dozens of not for profit groups through my media platform, including lots of free emceeing and interviewing to promote community initiatives. I have also worked alongside retailers and key stakeholders to try and mitigate the rough sleeping problem in the CBD.

The $41m Coastal Walkway extension must be paused. There also needs to be an internal review of the operational costs of the Len Lye Centre. The recent rates error means Council must find savings of $3.1m.

Council has generously funded Venture Taranaki to facilitate work in this space. The Taranaki approach to the Tapuae Roa 2050 roadmap remains strong, along with Council's district wide Emissions Reduction Plan.

The NPDC has committed close to $850,000 in funding for the YMCA rough sleeper shelter. It's also supported Taranaki Retreat initiatives, plus worked closely with police and key stakeholders.

Public consultation showed 57 percent of respondents wanted an in-house council owned water services business unit. And I voted that way, to respect the wishes of the public.
Yes
Extreme weather events continue to impact on council infrastructure, particularly roads and storm water facilities. Insurance premiums have also gone up by more than 35 percent.
No
I support the Active Hub, but was blindsided by an amendment during the LTP to increase funding by another $11m to $50m so we could have a six court facility.

The offer of free money for the cycling separators, and then a change of government not supporting them, has resulted in a compromised product, and this has upset many people.
Keep
It's the right thing to do. Working together results in better, wiser governance and better operational outcomes.
Venture Taranaki manages the funding for our major district events. Council has just approved a special Events Reserve Policy. Politics must be kept out of events management.
Reining in rates is the priority. We won't be the sustainable lifestyle capital if rates increase by 37 percent every three years. I resolve to be pragmatic and positive.
