Find out more about the revised designs for the South Road/Devon Street West (SH45) project, and how they have been informed by previous feedback.
The revised designs aim to address public concerns and would still significantly improve walking and cycling infrastructure. While in some ways the new options are a compromise on best practice safety design, they still meet design safety standards.
|Public concern||Design amendment(s)|
|Loss of car parks - particularly near businesses||
|Designs would impact traffic flow/congestion||
|Lane width too narrow for heavy haulage||
|Shared paths or two-way cycle lanes weren’t considered||
This design makes changes to retain more carparks near businesses, increases road width, and retains two-lane queuing (i.e. side by side) at key intersections. It also retains 11 in-lane bus stops proposed in the original design. This option results in 246 car parks being removed, 17 fewer than originally proposed.
This design makes the same changes as option #1 but proposes only two in-lane bus stops. It results in 246 existing car parks being removed, 17 fewer than originally proposed.
This design considers best practice and makes the same changes as option #2 but introduces 600m of two-way protected cycle lane between Belt Road and Mt Edgcumbe Street. It only includes one in-lane bus stop but two additional raised crossings. This option results in 210 car parks being removed, 53 fewer than originally proposed.
